BBSSH 1.1.4 alpha now available
by Marc on Mar.03, 2010, under Projects
BBSSH has been updated with the following changes:
- Bug fix – Telnet connection types are now properly saved, and connect correctly
- Bug fix – WiFi connections now work
- Feature – “special keys” support added, and has been bound to ALT+right-side convenience key.
- Framework – macro support is integrated and bound to ALT+mute/stdby button.(Note: macro creation screen has not been added, so this doesn’t help very much…)
You can grab the latest OTA download from this location – pick choose “BBSSH.jad” as the file to download. You may need to click the direct-link option after the next page loads.

Edit 3/4: fixed the bad link
Edit 3/4 again: REALLY fixed the bad link this time

Wifi is working now. Yay!
But ALT+right-side convenience key and ALT+mute/stdby have no effect. I was hoping to have ~ (tilde) in the special keys. There is a bunch of temporary files I’d like to delete.

@Luc – thanks for the feedback
What model are you using? On the 1.1.4 build on my Bold, I was just able to confirm that Alt+Right convenience key is bringing up the ‘special keys’ form. I am a bit concerned that Storm models may behave a bit differently though.
The intent of the special keys form is for keys that are not normally available in any way on BB – Pause, Clear, F1-F12, etc. The regular keyboard characters can still be access through the BB Symbols table.
To do that now, you’d use the input window overlay – then press the SYM key. You can get to the input window from the menu, by pressing VolUp, or by using Hybrid input mode (Mute/Stdby by itself to toggle input modes).

In the future, I also plan to allow the standard BB symbols table to be bound to a key of your choice. That’s a bit trickier than I expected though, so it’s taking some time.

Ok. The input overlay works very well. Thanks!
My BB is the 8900. Both the convenience keys work with no modifiers. Alt+Left convenience key also works. Alt+Right convenience key does nothing. I really tried, pressed it several times, restarted the app, tried again… Still nothing.

Ahh, I know what happened. I should have included this – since you already had the earlier version installed, you’ll need to refresh the key-mappings to recognize the new option. From the main screen, go to “Keybindings” menu option, then choose “Reset All” from that screen’s menu. (I’d suggest against tweaking other things on that screen, as it’s not completed yet.)
Before this is out of “alpha” I’ll make it automatically refresh if the user has not customized keybindings (since I don’t want to overwrite the customizations).
March 4th, 2010 on 12:37 pm
Sorry, still no luck. I followed the procedure, saw a message “Key binding reset complete” then tried and got nothing. I closed and restarted the app… Nothing.
Please send me an e-mail if you wish to proceed. It’s better for me than posting here.

Hey Marc,
Tyvm for your time developing the app. Could I just point out one suggestion, namely letting the user specify the SSH port? There are a lot of servers out there configured in non-standard (22) ssh port.
I would make the changes myself, but I’m using the Eclipse Plugin, ass opposed to JDE
. And I’m a bit lazy “porting” the svn branch to work with Eclipse.
Thank you in advance,
Iraklis

Iraklis – thanks for trying it out. You can specify an alternative port today — just use the format “host:port” like “example.com:2098″. (Actually, the project is configured for Netbeans — Both the JDE and Eclipse make me itch
)

Excellent works like a charm ty
.
I’m waiting until RIM sorts out 64bit/windows7/eclipse plugin compatibility issues, because to be honest on my current setup (win7 64bit) its not worth it.

hi, thank you for this good software.
I’m new in BB, I’m using curve 8520. The only error so far is when I’m in hybrid input mode and my BB goes idle, I can’t manage to open BBSSH again or close current session (frozen) then I have to restart my BB by pulling out the battery.

Nice work.
I can get it to lock up.
When I’m connected to a server (SSH via BES) if I select Input Screen, then in input screen select the BB Menu the app and then just escape back to the input menu the phone locks up.
Phone – 9630 OS : 4.7.1.61
Thx,
Dylan

@Sharren – I have also been able to reproduce this,a nd a fix is coming soon. In the mean time, you can at least continue to use the BB by holding down the menu button for a few seconds – this should display the application switcher.
You won’t be able to return to BBSSH without a battery pull though.

This seems quite promising (I was never able to get midpssh working on my Curve 8310) but I can’t install this on my phone – it tells me it needs the net_rim_bbapi_messagelist module, which is not installed. From some searching, it seems this module is only included in 4.6 and above, and I’m on 4.5. Is there any sort of workaround for this, or any chances of a 4.5 compatible client?
March 7th, 2010 on 8:28 pm
@dhiren – In the short term I plan for 4.6 only. Once the original planned featureset is complete, I will work on making phone-specific builds. Currently, I am some functionality in 4.6 that is not available in 4.5 (namely notifications). So – the short answer is if you hang in there, I *do* plan on providing a 4.5 release, but I don’t yet have an ETA.
Alternatively, if you take a look at the blackberry site, you may find 4.6 is available for you to download.
My biggest worry for the 8300 series is the keyboard – my wife used to have such a phone, and that keyboard definitely will not work for “direct input” mode. You’d need to use hybrid mode for almost everything, and that may be limiting if you tend to need a lot of key combinations like “ALT+” or “CTRL+”.
@Dylan – see above comment to Sharren, I’ve opened a bug against that and am trying to figure out how to fix it — it’s an odd one.

doesn’t seems to work well on my Storm II 9550.
Can’t really go between fields (difficult to navigate between fields) and when I try to connect it says no APN specified.
March 9th, 2010 on 3:00 pm
@Mark – 4.6 for 8300? Really? I cannot find it. Any suggestion? Otherwise, I will wait for the 4.5 version too. tnx

Hi, I tried to download the BBSSH.jad file from sourceforge and I get an error after download (907 Invalid COD, File not found).
BTW I’m running BB OS 5.
March 10th, 2010 on 11:14 am
@Gianmarco – it appears I was mistaken. Rather, there was a rumor of a rumor that it was available, but that doesn’t seem to be the case
@Kelvin could you provide a bit more detail? In what way is it difficult to navigate? As far as APN – that may be b/c your provider has not configured your device to allow for direct TCP connections. Are you using BES or BIS?
@Daniel It seems several people have been having problems using the sourceforge links – tonight I will also set up a download directly from this site, as it seems to be the easiest way to ensure it’s going to work.
March 10th, 2010 on 11:44 am
@Kelvin – it looks like not all carriers will support direct TCP connections. However, what I can do is provide a configuration option that allows you to manually enter your APN info — sometimes they support it but do not configure the devices for it by default.
The link below appears to be an up-to-date and reliable source of APN connection strings – once the next BBSSH version is out, you would need to find the APN info corresponding to your provider, then copy it into the connection properties screen:

Good work Marc, keep it up
March 11th, 2010 on 9:29 pm
I’m also having trouble getting it from the SF link on my BB browser. I can’t wait to try this out!
By the way, should I uninstall MidpSSH first?
March 11th, 2010 on 10:53 pm
Wow! Nice work! Just downloaded to my Bold 9000 (v5.0.0.509) and it is working like a champ! Haven’t played around with the various input modes, but it connected to my Linux server with no issues at all on the first try.
I’ll try to make some time to play around with it this weekend and provide any feedback that seems appropriate.
Thanks so much for taking the time to do this and release it. MidpSSH was always nice but never so polished. You’re really doing the BB community a huge service here and I for one really appreciate your efforts.
Thanks!

Nevermind it worked the fourth time around. Looking forward to this, thanks!
